Requirements and Broken Hearts

As the little black darling
hurried past me,
she had tears on her cheeks.
So I enquired:
“Why are you crying Miss Lady,
when you just finished dancing like a butterfly
tiptoeing on daisy petals?”
Between her sobs, she muttered,
“Only white girls can be ballerinas,
’cause our butts are too big to be graceful!”
Then she winked,
and floated away to the next flower.

—From Capt’s Dreaming Chair

Capt’s Dreaming Chair by Eddie Bell, is heartfelt and direct. The elegiac portraits at its core are vividly drawn and thoughtfully situated in African-American history and culture. The book deals squarely and openly with the wound of racism. Bell shows the bitter consequences of his family's struggle to survive within a painfully narrowed range of opportunity. Yet there is a sweetness at the heart of Capt’s Dreaming Chair, which resonates with a sense of redeeming power of love. Bell is not presenting “victims” here. The book insists on the dignity, honor and complex humanity of the lives he celebrates.”

“As a poet, Eddie Bell has his finger on the pulse of life's realities.”

—Reverend Willie L. Hardin

“Your poetry and language are gorgeous!” “I was almost brought to tears a few times. Thanks!”
